Infinity Line Kazak

Hello!

My name is Will and I've been invited to post to this blog, which was really nice of the guys who run it.  I play 40K and some other games, and I do my best with painting and I'm going to post some photos here of a recent paint job I did, the Infinity Veteran Kazak.

So, about me, I'm a lazy, lazy man.  With that in mind, I started by giving the model a black base coat:

I do this because my approach to painting is to create depth through shadow.  With a black base coat I can then build up highlights through dry brushing, which is really easy and works great.

I then applied a coat of dark angel green on the armor parts, and graveyard earth on the pants, arms, and other leather parts.  But because I was kinda drunk while painting this model, I forgot to take that picture.

Right, so after that, I hit the model with a badab black wash:

And as you can see, that almost completely undid my first coats of green and brown!  Actually I guess you can't see that since I didn't take a picture of this model before the badab black wash.  Anyway, I've never had that happen before.  I've used this trick many times since the GW wash was introduced to me, and normally it creates great depth.

But I'm not sure if because this model is white metal, or if I used too much of the wash, or what, but it backfired on me completely.

So basically I reapplied the green and browns, and then drybrushed on highlights, and this is how the model turned out.

Oh yeah, I should probably mention, I highlight by mixing 1/2 of the original color with bleached bone.  I like that better than straight up white because the highlight comes out a little softer.

I'm pretty pleased with how it looks, considering I had a few beers in me and apply so little effort to my painting jobs.

Army of the Future part II

In reading Mad Mark's post about his Army of the Future, I was inspired to take the plunge and start mine as well. Although perhaps "Back to the Future" is a better title for me as I will be instead re-doing my Tau.

The last stand of my red Tau? A great apocalypse game, which the Tau and Black Templar barely won... You can also see a masterful converted Ork warmachine from a monolith by my friend Thor in the foreground, and Ron's gorgeously painted landraider on the left.

My motivation is not so much about having a competitive army as my existing Tau did quite well until the last year of 5th, and have been reborn in sixth. Rather it was that I had grown tired of the paint scheme and felt that my ability to convert and green stuff has grown since the army came to life four years ago. So now I start again...

So where do I start? Well the proceeds from trading away my Dark Eldar have netted me a tremendous haul of used minis and plenty of sprues on BarterTown. My existing Tau are being stripped (resin or metal) or traded away (plastic). I am trying to procure some Imperial Guard and SM scouts to convert into human auxiliaries to add some variety to the firewarriors. Finally I have placed an order with Forgeworld for a couple more suits to spruce it all up.

More to come as I have lots of work to do. Some pics of the beginning...

The desk - stripped pathfinders, some broadsides, more suits etc...

BIG box of sprues!

I love the smell of Simple Green in the morning...

Workspaces

I'm always fascinated by everyone's different hobby set-up, thought it was time to share mine...

This is my current pile... Slowly going through and magnetizing all of my old models as well as building more crisis suits. Really want to run a Farsight bomb with lots more crisis suits in one of our apocalypse games. Also picked up a few resin pieces from Paulson games. Very nice sculpts, but a lot more flash than I get from ForgeWorld...

Paints, tools and lots more models that I need to convert/clean...

One of the crisis suits I am working on. Cut the leg and arm to try and create more motion, although need to shift the torso a bit more to complete the effect. Also as I look at the pic definitely need to clean up the greenstuff on the arm and smooth out the burst cannon.

This is where I store the stuff. Open space is where the paints and tools and stuff go. You can also see more of my "need to be worked on stuff here as well." The Falcon is not hovering, it is placed on top of three mostly assembled rhinos. Bottom left are the codices I play with most often, my White Dwarf collection and Forge World books. Bottom right are my bitz boxes.

Finally the shelf where I keep unopened kits, less often used codices, the fantasy books I really need to get around to selling, and my big box of sprues that need to get built.

Not pictured are my models which are all handily packed in foam and stacked in another large closet.

Have pics of your work spaces? Please share!

Army of the Future

(One of the many nice looking armies encountered at the NOVA Open)

I attended the NOVA open recently as a spectator and I learned a few things I hadn't figured out about tournaments yet. First, the theme of most of the armies that are successful in a highly competitive atmosphere like the NOVA is simply 'Winning'. Second, I care more about a good theme and background for my army than winning. That being said, even if I abandoned the 'fluff' behind my arguably powerful Grey Knights army, and built a list to win I'd probably still come in at the bottom tier (I was in the meat of the bottom quarter at the NOVA last year).

What does this mean for the future of my armies? I'll be trying to build a successful tournament army, it will have redundancy, firepower and most of all it will fit in with the style of army lists that seem so popular at tournaments since the addition of fliers. It will be called 'Operation Douche' and will be an IG forced focusing on getting the maximum amount of Conscripts on the board and choking up my opponents with corpses. We'll see if I can keep up the steam to get it ready for the NOVA next year.

The more imminent focus however will be an Inquisitorial Task Force from the Grey Knights codex with an allied contingent of Adeptus Arbites (who will be played by Space Marine Scouts).  I've always wanted an Arbites army ever since I first saw the 2nd ed models and with the recent release of Maxmini's 'Space Police Helmets' I decided the finally take the plunge.

I've begun work on my Judge Dredd look alike who will be a counts as Chaplain Cassius, and he'll soon be followed by about 20 scouts of various types and maybe an Adeptus Mechanicus Thunderfire cannon as well.

Seeing him blown up this large makes me see how much of a hack job I did with the greenstuff. I'm going to have to do a lot of cleanup.

I hope to bring this army to Adepticon for the 40k friendly this year so I'll be trying to use blog posts as a motivator to keep my momentum going to get this assembled by about February.

Farseer W.I.P.

I figured it would be a good time to introduce my in progress Farseer with a blurry picture taken with my crappy phone (better pics to come...I promise). The model is made by Cool Mini and I think it's pretty amazing. Her golden hair is actually artificial, her Ghost Helm, her simple armor studded with wraithbone.

She wields a witchblade and I decided against trying to strap a pistol to her, as it looked awkward. I think I can get away with mounting it on the base in a less awkward manner.

I've used a Farseer before and have enjoyed it immensely. Shutting down psychic powers with Runes of warding is a blast and the Divination powers always bring something to the table. I plan on running her with some harlequins to maximize her survivability and hopefully boost their combat effectiveness.

Really, I just want an excuse to use this mini. I love it! I'll reveal her in all her glory and fill out her back story a.s.a.p. She definitely needs a name...

NOVA OPEN!

The NOVA Open has come and gone.

Heres a (not so) quick summary of my games:

I ran Dark Angels, the classic thunderhammer/storm shield/cyclone Deathwing list. Take from that what you will. I've been playing Dark Eldar since 6th dropped and have been frustrated trying to fit that square peg of an army into the round hole that the game has become. I was ready for a change of pace, so I opted to take last years list, chuck Ezekiel in there, and go for it. No playtesting? No problem...

Game one was vs. a space marine list that would have been better in fifth. It had a bastion, which my thunderhammers could not penetrate, but a squad of termies glanced the contents into red paste. The rest of the army followed suit.

My game two opponent was Space Wolf player Pierre Daze. This was one of the toughest and closest games a played during the event, but was also quite fun. Daze was a great opponent whose Wolves eked out a a victory on turn 6.

Saturday morning my round three opponent came as something of a surprise. Stelek: the internet personality 40k players love to hate. His list was a Grey Knights mech spam with Space Wolf allies that produced an ass-load of firepower. In a head-to-head fight, I think my terminators could have rushed him and probably crushed his vehicles, but I needed to hold objectives, fight for kill points, and try to control table quarters all at the same time.

Stelek was not the total douche he is online. I had to ask him to check line of sight again and again, and he seemed to think he deserved cover a bit more than I did. The real reason the game was not fun was because I was playing an assault army vs. a torrent of fire gunline. This does not work well in 6th. He shot me up, slowly but surely, until I had so little on the table I could not hope to win.

After loosing to Stelek I played a combo Blood Angels/Dark Angels list. I thought I had this one in the bag, but my entire command squad disappeared to a single shot from a Vindicator on turn 2. Even then if the game ended on turn 5 I would have won. It didn't, and my opponent wisely crammed Mephiston down my throat, contesting the objective I needed to win.

Game 5 was against Ork player Ted Crawford. This was, hands down, the most enjoyable game I played during the course of the event. Ted was running Nob biker led orks with a fair number of battlewagons, boyz and lootas, all of which were impeccably painted. Ezekiel shone in this one, repeatedly force weaponing nobz, and giving me the advantage I needed to win. The game was low-pressure, like a garage game between buddies. I hope I get to play Ted again, he was a great guy with a great attitude.

Game 6 was against Hans Cote and a Dark Eldar/Eldar army. He plays at Battleground in Plainville, MA, so we were familiar, but had not played each other. This one looked like it was going to be a challenge. Hans was running three Voidraven Bombers in addition to Eldrad and all manner of Eldar and Dark Eldar pew. I think, in the end, I won because of the massive piece of terrain in the center of the table. It allowed me to hide my command squad in the center of the table where they could hold an objective and threaten anyone who came close. Quarters was the primary. We tied that (this is generally my plan with such a small army in a tiered objective game) and I won on objectives.

Ezekiel was a pimp daddy in this game. Twice he moved through cover, busted into the danger zone like the Kool-Aid Man, and charged units of warriors coming to contest the objective, wiped them out and then retreated back out of sight thanks to high consolidation rolls. He eventually died to prescienced scatter lasers, but more than earned his points.

Game 7 was against last years NOVA GT finalist Allan "Blackmoor" Hernandez. Blackmoor was running a Dark Eldar/Footdar list that had clearly not performed as he had planned. He told me that he had not even playtested it. I think there is a chance I could have won this game on my own merits, but poor dice doomed me before I ever had a chance. Ones were popping up left and right, either when shooting multiple crack missiles at units of a few spread out Dire Avengers and failing to wound, or failing 2+ armor saves. At the end of the final round Allan made what appeared to be a series of atrocious blunders, running warriors off objectives, and forgetting to move jetbikes. It turns out, however, that he did not want to play another game; an airbrushing class he had signed up for was pending, and a win meant he would miss it. Whatevs I'll take it. I was tired, but was into playing another game.

My final opponent was running a Necrons/Orks combo. This game was for the top spot in our bracket. It was a hard fight that in the end I lost due more to my ignorance of the Necron codex than anything else. FYI: it is a bit on the douchy side to not include the wargear descriptions with your list, especially if you are printing it from army builder. Ultimately, however, its my fault for not asking if I don't know what something does.

Oh well live and learn.

Tomorrow I'll post a bit more about the event itself: how things were run, the missions, how it compared to last year's NOVA, and to Adepticon.

Stay tuned...

Updating for 6th edition

With the advent of 6th edition I have taken some time to consider my 40k path going forward. In the wake of this I have come to several decisions, most of which stem from a single realization - I do not have the hobby or game time to field more than two primary armies.

I have today three full armies. The full armies are a DIY space marine chapter, a Tau sept, and a dark eldar kabal. The question therefore becomes "what do I keep?"

Well I have the most time and resources invested in my dark angel successor chapter of space marines. Frustrated with the Dark Angel codex and how it compared with the vanilla codex I started running them as Vanilla marines to make the bikes work properly. Then with each successive SM codex released I would add bits and pieces to allow me to run different iterations of lists I found interesting. Today this giant collection can be run as bike marines, a DOA blood angels list, MSU mech, Land Raider based rock army and every iteration in between. Thanks to the addition of a Fellblade this is now also my primary Apocalypse army.

My Tau are much smaller, somewhere around 2500 some points worth of Tau. They frankly also possess the worst paint job of any of my armies. However, they are the play style I enjoy the most, the models (specifically battlesuits) that I love to convert, and frankly given that they are less often played, the ones that I enjoy the most.

So the Dark Eldar, which also happen to be my most recent acquisition, are the ones left out in the cold. Goodbye to the time spent buying and assembling (and lazily getting someone to paint them). They are today being traded away on Bartertown (although if someone wants a pretty army cheap let me know).

My next decision was what to do with my old Daemonhunters force. I was at first excited by the prospect of the Gray Knights codex breathing new life into my old models, but all the band jumpers coupled with the lack of a challenge presented when playing Gray Knights, quickly bored me.

Sixth edition's addition of allies made me consider incorporating them into my other armies. However, I felt that it was too much of a fluff travesty to play them with my Tau. Even though I used multiple SM codices to play my marines I still thought of their fluff as members of the Dark Angel family and the distrust with which the DA view the inquisition soured me on that aspect as well. So they have to go as well.

So where do I end up? Well the picture below should give you some idea... Fleshing out my Tau and building a small Eldar force to ally with them. I also bought half of a Dark Vengeance box and will spiff up my marines. Sixth edition here I come.
