More to come, but for the meantime here's a pic from the 30k doubles event which was one of the most exciting games I've ever played. While leading my Iron Hands, with their brothers in arms The Salamanders at their sides, Ferrus Manus and his cohorts fought valiantly against an impressive Emperor's Children army. It ended with a win but not before Fulgrim decapitated his brother Ferrus in a martial showdown for the ages.

Getting Ready for NOVA Open's Capital Palette
In a little over a week we'll be trekking from New England to the DC area for the 2015 Nova Open. I won't be playing in any events, except possibly some Age Of Sigmar games, but I'll trying to bring my A-game (or at least my B-game) to this years years Capital Palette. Last year I completely dropped the ball with my prep work and ended up not submitting any entries, I really regret being so damn lazy after winning a Silver medal the previous year. I'm trying to make up for things this year so if you end up down there keep an eye for some of these models in the display cases.
I've been trying to refine the Iron Hands Legion Praetor I started a few months back. I added some more pronounced highlights as well as a few chapter and clan markings from the Forge World decal sheet. I also played with adding some shadows to the base for the first time, I like the effect but there's no way I'd be able to put that much work into a whole army. Now he's looking a little meaner and more fitting of his stature in "The Iron Tenth". There are a couple small details left but I think I'm about ready to call this guy complete.
I've also done quite a bit of tedious work on some Tau Pathfinders that I've been working on for two plus years now. I probably over did the paint job considering their value on the battlefield but that's sort of my problem in general, I have a tough time taking short cuts of any kind when painting. I really went to town with some weathering pigments on their bases which I think are looking pretty sharp. Now I just need to finish the rest of this Tau army to the same standard.

Lion's Blade Battle Company - Part II
Did some more work on the Lion's Blade Battle Company tonight. I built the final rhino, and used the Citadel Caliban Green spray can to coat most of the brand new or unfinished old marines (except for a few of the robe wearers; they're still primer white), the two new rhinos, and the two old razorbacks (converted from seldom used predators).
For anyone who's curious, the list is:
Dark Angels - 1850 Points - Lion's Blade Detachment
Demi-Company I
- Captain w/combi-grav and auspex
- Command Squad w/apothecary, sacred standard, 4 grav guns, and drop pod w/deathwind launcher (because deathwind's are awesome -- don't let anyone tell you otherwise)
- Assault Squad (5-man) w/2 flamers, combi-flamer sgt., and drop pod w/deathwind launcher (still awesome)
- (3x)Tactical Squad (5-man) w/combi-melta sgt., meltagun, and rhino
- Devastator Squad (5-man) w/4 missile launchers, and a razorback w/a TL heavy bolter
Demi-Company II
- Chaplain w/jump pack
- Assault Squad (10-man) w/jump packs
- (3x)Tactical Squad (5-man) w/grav-cannon, and rhino
- Devastator Squad (5-man) w/4 missile launchers, and a razorback w/a TL heavy bolter
Auxiliary
- Ravenwing Support Squadron w/3 Typhoons w/heavy bolters, and Dark Shroud w/heavy bolter
Army-wide special rules for this formation are: stubborn (from the DA ability Grim Resolve), objective secured on everything (from the Lion's Blade formation), and full BS overwatch on all models with Grim Resolve (basically infantry models -- this is from having a battle company within the Lion's Blade). Also, all the transports were free, although I did have to pay for upgrades (awesome deathwind launchers).
The command squad gets relentless from their sacred standard, so they are always firing their grav guns at the full 18" range, and 3 shot rate of fire. The banner also gives counter attack to the command squad, and has a 12" bubble of re-rollable failed morale, pinning, and fear checks. These guys will be great to drop next to a badass assaulty (but not shooty) unit with even a mediocre armor save.
The Ravenwing support squadron has some special rules of its own: interceptor and strafing run (from the Ravenwing Support Squadron formation), re-rollable jink saves (Ravenwing models with Grim Resolve get this). The Dark Shroud has shrouded, which is passed on to the rest of the support squadron (because they share special rules like any unit), and it gives stealth and fear to units within 6". It cannot receive the benefit of this stealth bubble, but the Typhoons in the same squadron can, so they will obviously be staying out front. In addition, units within 6" of the Dark Shroud can't fire overwatch when assaulted. Pretty solid.
Some stats:
- 62 marines, 6 rhinos, 2 razorbacks, 2 drop pods, 4 speeders
- grav shots: 33 max (21 min -- after combi's are fired, or when grav-cannons move)
- melta shots : 6 max (3 min -- after combi's are fired)
- missiles: 14 (frag or krak)
- heavy bolter shots: 18
Potential flaws:
- No AA - just lots of missile and grav shots. Lets hope what's there is enough.
- No psychic powers or psychic defense.
- MSU. I will always lose kill point missions.
Not sure about:
- The jump pack assault marines and chaplain. I feel like they will be useful, even if it's only because people underestimate them. I think having objective secured, the ability to deep strike and combat squad, and fast movement, will make them useful. They do put out 34 re-rollable hits the first round of close combat. Not too shabby.
I'm hoping "quantity over quality" will prove to be a sound strategy... or at least make for some fun games.

Lions Blade Battle Company
The NOVA Open 2015 list is coming together. I built one rhino last night (not pictured) and have one more to go, and then I can start speed painting everything to at least three colors.

Dark Angels Grav Command Squad
This is the first step toward my Lion's Blade battle company for the NOVA Open. I'll expand on that in another post this week.
The grav guns are from forge world, and the dude with the wing helmet is my new basic, shooty company master with combi-grav, and (not modelled) auspex.
The creepy cherubs are going to drag the banner around, and will just serve as a marker for the designated bearer. Tall banners were always a pain in uneven terrain, and modelling for different outs was even worse. This should mitigate both issues. Also, I always hated the idea that one of the most elite marines in one of the most elite units had to drag a big unwieldy flag around with him.

NOVA OPEN!
The NOVA Open has come and gone.
Heres a (not so) quick summary of my games:
Heres a (not so) quick summary of my games:
I ran Dark Angels, the classic thunderhammer/storm shield/cyclone Deathwing list. Take from that what you will. I've been playing Dark Eldar since 6th dropped and have been frustrated trying to fit that square peg of an army into the round hole that the game has become. I was ready for a change of pace, so I opted to take last years list, chuck Ezekiel in there, and go for it. No playtesting? No problem...
Game one was vs. a space marine list that would have been better in fifth. It had a bastion, which my thunderhammers could not penetrate, but a squad of termies glanced the contents into red paste. The rest of the army followed suit.
My game two opponent was Space Wolf player Pierre Daze. This was one of the toughest and closest games a played during the event, but was also quite fun. Daze was a great opponent whose Wolves eked out a a victory on turn 6.
Saturday morning my round three opponent came as something of a surprise. Stelek: the internet personality 40k players love to hate. His list was a Grey Knights mech spam with Space Wolf allies that produced an ass-load of firepower. In a head-to-head fight, I think my terminators could have rushed him and probably crushed his vehicles, but I needed to hold objectives, fight for kill points, and try to control table quarters all at the same time.
Stelek was not the total douche he is online. I had to ask him to check line of sight again and again, and he seemed to think he deserved cover a bit more than I did. The real reason the game was not fun was because I was playing an assault army vs. a torrent of fire gunline. This does not work well in 6th. He shot me up, slowly but surely, until I had so little on the table I could not hope to win.
After loosing to Stelek I played a combo Blood Angels/Dark Angels list. I thought I had this one in the bag, but my entire command squad disappeared to a single shot from a Vindicator on turn 2. Even then if the game ended on turn 5 I would have won. It didn't, and my opponent wisely crammed Mephiston down my throat, contesting the objective I needed to win.
Game 5 was against Ork player Ted Crawford. This was, hands down, the most enjoyable game I played during the course of the event. Ted was running Nob biker led orks with a fair number of battlewagons, boyz and lootas, all of which were impeccably painted. Ezekiel shone in this one, repeatedly force weaponing nobz, and giving me the advantage I needed to win. The game was low-pressure, like a garage game between buddies. I hope I get to play Ted again, he was a great guy with a great attitude.
Game 6 was against Hans Cote and a Dark Eldar/Eldar army. He plays at Battleground in Plainville, MA, so we were familiar, but had not played each other. This one looked like it was going to be a challenge. Hans was running three Voidraven Bombers in addition to Eldrad and all manner of Eldar and Dark Eldar pew. I think, in the end, I won because of the massive piece of terrain in the center of the table. It allowed me to hide my command squad in the center of the table where they could hold an objective and threaten anyone who came close. Quarters was the primary. We tied that (this is generally my plan with such a small army in a tiered objective game) and I won on objectives.
Ezekiel was a pimp daddy in this game. Twice he moved through cover, busted into the danger zone like the Kool-Aid Man, and charged units of warriors coming to contest the objective, wiped them out and then retreated back out of sight thanks to high consolidation rolls. He eventually died to prescienced scatter lasers, but more than earned his points.
Game 7 was against last years NOVA GT finalist Allan "Blackmoor" Hernandez. Blackmoor was running a Dark Eldar/Footdar list that had clearly not performed as he had planned. He told me that he had not even playtested it. I think there is a chance I could have won this game on my own merits, but poor dice doomed me before I ever had a chance. Ones were popping up left and right, either when shooting multiple crack missiles at units of a few spread out Dire Avengers and failing to wound, or failing 2+ armor saves. At the end of the final round Allan made what appeared to be a series of atrocious blunders, running warriors off objectives, and forgetting to move jetbikes. It turns out, however, that he did not want to play another game; an airbrushing class he had signed up for was pending, and a win meant he would miss it. Whatevs I'll take it. I was tired, but was into playing another game.
My final opponent was running a Necrons/Orks combo. This game was for the top spot in our bracket. It was a hard fight that in the end I lost due more to my ignorance of the Necron codex than anything else. FYI: it is a bit on the douchy side to not include the wargear descriptions with your list, especially if you are printing it from army builder. Ultimately, however, its my fault for not asking if I don't know what something does.
Oh well live and learn.
Tomorrow I'll post a bit more about the event itself: how things were run, the missions, how it compared to last year's NOVA, and to Adepticon.
Stay tuned...

NOVA Open, Here I Come!
Armies are painted, display boards are assembled; the Deathwing, Grey Knights, and Iron Hands are prepared for an epic series of confrontations. Battle reports and camera phone pictures will follow so keep your data slate close, your ear to the vox caster, and an orison to the God Emperor on the tip of your tongue.
For my part, the army is legal, but hardly in the condition that I aspired to. I guess I will have to plan on getting Best Painted at Adepticon instead...
Maybe I will try to get these dancing fools in shape for that performance:

NOVA Open Display Board - Painting Progress
These are just a few shots of the current state of my Grey Knights display board. With only a week to go it's crunch time for getting things as close to done as I can. I only wish my army was looking as complete as their display does right now.
Most of the painting is complete on the board with the exception of a few small details such as the wooden railings and some metallic details on the burst sewer lines. Overall I learned some good lessons about what to do for next time but more importantly what not to do. I'll also be adding some water effects to the greenish sewer pool but I'm still waiting for my test batch to cure but I'll have to start that tonight or tomorrow so the display board has enough time to cure completely.
On to the pictures...
Up next, some well lit, clear images of the truly completed display board instead of these sloppy cell phone shots.

Grey Knights are painted

But I still have lot of details to go. I'm going to assembly line a lot of the details and try to get everyone fully painted for the nova open.
